Founded in 1980, the Boston Alliance of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Youth (BAGLY) is an organization led by and for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning youth to meet the core physical, social, and developmental needs of Greater Boston’s LGBTQ+ youth community. Today, BAGLY provides community-based leadership development, health promotion, and social support programs for Massachusetts’ LGBTQ+ youth communities, and is a leader in local and national LGBTQ+ youth advocacy.

As the Communications Manager, reporting to the Director of Development & Marketing with the Development & Marketing team at BAGLY, you will help develop, implement, and measure BAGLY’s annual communications and marketing plan(s). You will largely own BAGLY’s outward-facing communications strategies, including the organization’s social media presence, website, branded merchandise, and the marketing of its programs and services. Additionally, you will support the organization’s engagement/outreach efforts with other non-profit organizations and MA-based schools. You will also work closely with your peers and colleagues to raise BAGLY’s profile, articulate BAGLY’s mission and impact, and facilitate strong written and presentation materials.

The current expectation is that this position will be hybrid at the BAGLY offices in downtown Boston, MA. Work-from-home and remote office accommodations will be determined on a case-by-case basis. Occasional travel will be required.

Duties & Responsibilities

Digital Presence and Communications


  • Consistently audit, update, and improve BAGLY’s website in order to increase program participation and donor engagement;
  • Design and implement a new SEO strategy to drive traffic to BAGLY’s website;

Social Media

  • Own BAGLY’s social media presence across 4 primary platforms - Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok;
  • Increase engagement with BAGLY’s accounts with both program participants and supporters;
  • Advise and assist with leveraging social media to increase donations and foster peer-to-peer fundraising;


  • Plan and implement e-mail campaigns related to:
  • Program and event participation;
  • Fundraising campaigns;
  • Content designed to identify BAGLY as a thought-leader in its field(s).

Printed Materials and Branding

Fund Development

  • Help to write and design annual fund direct mail campaigns;
  • Help to design and produce funder-oriented content and artifacts, such as annual reports and pitch decks;

Programs and Services

  • Design and create marketing materials to increase program participation;
  • Design and create SWAG for outreach and program engagement;
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to refine language and copy to best describe BAGLY’s offerings


  • Create robust materials for a striking appearance for BAGLY’s outreach efforts and tabling opportunities

Community Engagement

  • Work with the Director of Development & Marketing to create and achieve community engagement goals;
  • Attend community and partner events throughout Massachusetts;
  • Work to identify and solicit all types of new partnerships with an emphasis on working closely with school districts, community partners, and corporate partners

Managerial Responsibilities

  • Supervise Marketing and Community Engagement Coordinators
  • Provide supervision and guidance to peer leaders and interns, as applicable;
  • Work closely with colleagues, peers, and across teams;
  • Support the Director of Development & Marketing with achieving organizational goals, communicating organizational norms and policies, and upholding BAGLY’s values and mission.

Other duties as assigned. 

Ideal candidates will demonstrate capabilities that meet the basic qualifications. Advanced qualifications are a plus, but not required.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree with an emphasis on communications, marketing, and branding is preferred, but different combinations of work experience and education will be strongly considered;
  • Demonstrably strong and persuasive writing ability;
  • Enjoys public speaking opportunities;
  • Professional experience managing social media platforms and websites;
  • Project management experience in a team setting
  • Professional maturity;
  • Willingness to learn in an organization that is still learning and growing;
  • Experience working in advocacy, nonprofit organizations, leading employee resource groups, and/or public or funding institutions
  • Consistent record of meeting non-negotiable deadlines
  • Experience working with CRMs and online marketing tools 
  • Experience working with young people or other marginalized communities

Advanced Qualifications

  • Multilingual candidates are a plus. 
  • Experience supervising one or more employees;
  • Strong graphic design skills;
  • Experience designing and implementing a successful SEO strategy;
  • Advanced experience with website design and utility;
  • Experience working closely with fundraising and development campaigns;
  • Strong understanding of how to market programs and services to stakeholders that have been made vulnerable by structural oppression.
