The Massachusetts Children’s Trust (CT) is the state’s preeminent public-private partnership whose sole mission is the prevention of child abuse and neglect. The Children’s Trust leads statewide efforts to prevent child abuse and neglect by supporting parents and strengthening families.

The Children’s Trust Chief Operations Officer (COO) reports directly to the Executive Director of CT and is responsible for the management and oversight of agency functions/departments including Administration and Finance, Internal Operations and Business Systems, and in partnership with the Secretariat for IT and Human Resources support services. In addition, the COO will lead the execution and implementation of an agency-wide strategic planning process, office move, support of programmatic execution, and agency policies and procedures.

As a public/private entity, this position requires familiarity with 501(c)(3) charitable organizations and the skills and systems needed for success of such organization.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities: 

Executive level leadership and management

In partnership with Executive Director, provide strategic direction and management of the daily operations of CT including the supervision and development of staff to foster individual professional growth and a collaborative and supportive diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) team culture. Develop and refine systems to ensure smooth operations at the CT including Administration and Finance, Internal Operations, and Business Systems teams.

Strategy Development and Implementation

In collaboration with ED, Board of Directors, agency leaders, community members and providers, lead the operations of the CT strategic planning process and implementation. Includes the development of goals, metrics dashboard, and evaluation of performance to increase operational efficiency and effectiveness. Partnership development with other agencies, labor unions, vendor partners, etc is critical for the success of this body of work.

Agency-Specific Oversight and Support

The COO will oversee CTs multiple administrative systems for all programs and support functions to ensure an effective user experience for internal and external stakeholders. This includes the grants administration, contracting, database development and maintenance, grants administration, procurement processes, and financial oversight. COO is also the lead ensuring CT is complying with all state and federal regulations by partnering with state agencies and union.

  • Ability to work effectively in a matrixed organization, analyze complex programs, and design workable solutions for all stakeholders 

  • Highly skilled in exercising a high degree of initiative, judgement, discretion, and decision making to achieve objectives 

  • Ability to balance immediate priorities and urgent needs with the imperative to think strategically and thoughtfully for the longer term 

  • Proven ability to build relationships across departments and across organizations 

  • Experience with operations, budget management, contract/vendor management, labor management, and procurement processes, ideally within a public sector organization 

  • Experience working with complex information technology systems or software 

  • Prior experience in at least one of a variety of professional disciplines including but not limited to: human services, social work, early childhood development and/or education.
