Preschoolers grab shovels and break ground on new South Shore Stars playground

Students at the Randolph preschool location of South Shore Stars, a nonprofit provider of comprehensive early education and youth development programs for the communities south of Boston, led a groundbreaking ceremony for a new playground on Thursday.

The playground is being funded by a $250,000 grant from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The grant, from the state’s Early Education and Out-of-School Time (EEOST) capital improvement fund, is intended to help organizations renovate childcare facilities that serve primarily low-income families.

Theresa Jordan, Director, Children’s Investment Fund at CEDAC, Sen. Walter Timilty (D) Norfolk, Bristol and Plymouth and Rep. Bill Driscoll, Jr. (D) 7th Norfolk, all of whom played a role in making the funds available to Stars, took part in the ceremony, along with Stars staff and board members.

Stars was one of 17 organizations this year to receive an EEOST grant from The Skills Capital Grant Program, which ranged from $100,000 to $250,000. The grants are intended to support major renovations and construction projects at early education and out-of-school time facilities to expand capacity and improve the quality of learning environments, ensuring that children have safe and developmentally appropriate spaces to learn and play. Approximately 80 percent of the children in EEOST-funded programs are from low-income families.
