Comm. Foundation of SE Mass. Grants $594K to 34 Nonprofits

January 18, 2020 — The Community Foundation of Southeastern Massachusetts, based in New Bedford, recently announced it granted $594,678 in yearend awards to 34 local nonprofit organizations providing services related to education, homelessness, hunger, violence prevention, and youth safety, among other issues.

John Vasconcellos, president of the Community Foundation of Southeastern Massachusetts, noted, “Our job is to build philanthropy for the region and make it easier to match those who want to support good work with those who do good work, and these past few weeks have seen that happen in some wonderful and inspiring ways. We all know the range of needs in our community is broad but so is the capacity of those who want to help out”.

The following organizations received the grants:
  • Boys & Girls Club of Greater New Bedford/Wareham, New Bedford: $5,000 for the New Bedford Wellness Initiative

  • Buttonwood Park Zoological Society, New Bedford: $25,000 for capital investment for establishment of a preschool within the Nature Connection Education Center

  • Catholic Social Services - Sr. Rose House, New Bedford: $1,000 for a soup kitchen which feeds 200 people daily

  • Child & Family Services, New Bedford: $5,000 for the Caring Network Program

  • Children's Advocacy Center, a program of JRI, Fall River - Bristol County: $5,000 for Digital Responsibility for Bristol County Youth

  • Citizens for Citizens, Fall River: $1,000 for the CFC Food Pantry

  • Community Boating Center, New Bedford: $3,000 for general operating support

  • Dream Out Loud, New Bedford: $4,000 for general operating support

  • First Baptist Church - Fall River, Fall River: $1,000 for a soup kitchen and shelter for the homeless of Fall River

  • Global Learning Charter Public School, New Bedford: $90,000 for technology and equipment

  • The Greater Fall River Community Food Pantry, Fall River: $1,000 for The Greater Fall River Community Food Pantry

  • Junior Achievement of Southern Massachusetts (JA), New Bedford: $6,000 support to help plan, implement, and evaluate six elementary school JA classroom programs and six high school JA Job Shadow programs

  • Katie Brown Educational Program, Fall River - Bristol County: $5,000 for relationship violence prevention education in Southeastern Massachusetts

  • M.O.,L.I.F.E., Fairhaven: $1,000 for a weekly food pantry program

  • Martha Briggs Educational Club, New Bedford: $16,628 for restoration and storm window replacements at Sgt. William H. Carney Jr. Memorial Homestead

  • Mercy Meals and More, New Bedford: $1,000 for a soup kitchen providing free breakfast daily and food clinic on a weekly basis

  • New Bedford Art Museum, New Bedford: $4,000 for general operating support

  • New Bedford Ballet Foundation, New Bedford: $2,000 to support New Bedford schools programming

  • New Bedford Symphony Orchestra, New Bedford: $30,000 to support Learning in Concert, and $2,000 for general operating support

  • NorthStar Learning Center, New Bedford: $20,000 for the development and construction of a commercial kitchen, and $5,000 for general operating support

  • Old Dartmouth Historical Society/ New Bedford Whaling Museum, New Bedford: $100,000 for general operating support; $15,000 to support of Lighting the Way; $12,000 for general operating support; and $1,000 to support the Summer Gala

  • One Daily Bread Food & Resource, Fall River: $1,000 for a soup kitchen to feed 200 people weekly and a full pantry

  • Parish of Saint Ann, Quincy: $500 for the Annual Fund

  • Reach Out and Read, Bristol & Plymouth County: $12,500 for general operating support

  • Rhode Island Public Radio, New Bedford: $4,850 to support a bureau in downtown New Bedford as part of The Public's Radio coverage of Southeastern Massachusetts

  • Salvation Army, Fall River: $5,000 to purchase shelving that can adequately store grocery products for food assistance program

  • Southcoast Health, New Bedford: $20,000 for St. Luke's operating support, and $5,000 for Tobey operating support

  • Spinner Publications, New Bedford: $8,000 for the production expenses of The Paul Cuffe Story

  • Teach for America - Greater Boston, New Bedford: $2,500 to sponsor one New Bedford corps member and offset the cost to train, develop, and support the individual educator

  • UMass Dartmouth Foundation, Dartmouth: $70,000 to support College Now ($50k) and Journalism Alliance ($20k)

  • Veterans Transition House, New Bedford: $10,000 for Building Hope for Heroes Campaign - Bedroom at new Transition Housing Center

  • Youth Opportunities Unlimited Inc., New Bedford: $2,500 for the purchase of bicycle helmets to be distributed to local children

  • YWCA of Southeastern Massachusetts, New Bedford: $5,000 for the Financial Literacy Program for Women; $5,000 to support residential services programming; and $3,200 for the leadership development of the YWCA director of advocacy & resource development

  • Zeiterion Theatre, New Bedford: $50,000 to support the campaign for capital improvements; $25,000 to support the campaign for capital improvements; $3,000 for general operating support
