Three Nonprofits Get $225K for Social Media Safety for Girls

January 13, 2020 — The Fred Harris Daniels Foundation has awarded a $225,000 grant to be shared by the three largest girl-focused nonprofits in Worcester that have joined to form a new program designed to support girls and their families with the tools to be safe in today’s digital world.

Sharing the three-year grant are Girls Inc. of Worcester, Girl Scouts of Central and Western Massachusetts, and YWCA Central Massachusetts.

The new program, called All About MEdia, will be available free of charge to all girls in grades 5-8 in greater Worcester. For girls who don’t have a prior membership to one of the three organizations, membership will be covered by the grant. Girls will have the opportunity to attend the eight week All About MEdia series where they will explore online advertising, cyber-bullying, and creating healthy relationships.

“The board of the Daniels Foundation is very excited to provide funding for the All About MEdia project,” said Fred H. Daniels II, president of the foundation. “Not only does this offer a strong collaborative opportunity for the three largest girl-serving agencies in Worcester, but it also works to address a significant ongoing challenge for girls age 10-14 - the use and misuse of social media and the role that parents can play in helping girls to navigate the smartphone landscape.

"The connections between social media use and depression, cyber-bullying and self harm are clear; our goal is to protect Worcester's girls from these and other behaviors.”

All About MEdia focuses on three elements: social media, cyberbullying, and texting and sexting.

Since 2004 the Daniels Foundation has offered three-year grants targeting programs which focus on girls age 10-14, because the foundation felt it was the most under-resourced population in the Worcester.
