Two Plymouth Nonprofits Get $50K Each for Anniversary Year

December 20, 2019 — Two Plymouth-based nonprofits, Plimoth Plantation and Plymouth 400, each recently received grants of $50,000 from Eastern Bank to support ongoing efforts to promote the town during its 400th anniversary next year and help with restoration of the Mayflower II.

Plimoth Plantation is a museum that tells the story of the 17th century settlement of the Plymouth Colony, while Plymouth 400 provides strategic planning and implementation of events and programs for the National Commemoration of the voyage of Mayflower and the founding of Plymouth County.

“We are very pleased to partner with Eastern Bank in support of the town’s anniversary,” said Michele Pecoraro, executive director of Plymouth 400, quoted in Wicked Local Plymouth. “This is one of the largest grants we have received so far. It will go a long way toward funding our signature events and other programs in 2020.”

Plimoth Plantation will use the funds to help restore the 106-foot Mayflower II, a replica of the original Mayflower ship that brought the Pilgrims to New England in 1620. Mayflower II, a gift from the United Kingdom, was built in 1957 and has been undergoing an $11 million renovation at Mystic Seaport Museum since 2016. When completed, 70% of the ship will be new.

Mayflower II, officially launched and commissioned in September, will sail to Plymouth in the spring, with the exact date yet to be announced.

Plymouth 400 is hosting a number of events to commemorate the events of 1620, funding its activities through corporate and private donations, and through an auction of a special 2020 Anniversary License Plate featuring low-numbers and selective numbers, e.g., 1620, 1957.

Plimoth Plantation began in 1947 as two English cottages and a fort on Plymouth’s historic waterfront, and added various elements, including the English Village, since then. Today, permanent exhibits tell the intertwined stories of English and Native cultures.
