November 7, 2014 — Facing History and Ourselves, a Brookline nonprofit educational and professional development organization that seeks to engage students in examining racism, recently announced that it has named Roger Brooks as its president and chief executive officer.

Brooks, former dean of the faculty and chief academic officer at Connecticut College, will assume his new role at Facing History and Ourselves on Dec. 1.

“Roger Brooks’ deeply caring, thoughtful, results-oriented leadership style is an excellent match for Facing History and Ourselves,” said Seth Klarman, chair of Facing History’s board of trustees. “I am confident that his stewardship will continue to strengthen the organization’s culture and business model.”

Brooks , a renowned educator, scholar, and leader, also is currently a fellow at the Center for Institutional and Social Change at Columbia University Law School.

As dean at Connecticut College, Brooks advanced the school’s information technology program, developed capital projects, expanded fundraising, and increased faculty diversity. He received the John S. King Memorial Award, the highest teaching honor Connecticut College confers on faculty.

“I am deeply moved by the mission of Facing History and Ourselves,” said Brooks, “and even more by the impact our teachers have on their students’ lives, as they develop into critical thinkers who are driven to improve their communities, both locally and globally."

Facing History and Ourselves was founded 38 years ago by educators who wanted to teach lessons learned from the Holocaust and other genocides and the struggles for civil rights from Birmingham to South Africa. Today it has educational partnerships around the world, including Northern Ireland, Israel, South Africa, and China and reaches nearly three million students yearly through more than 90,000 educators.

Facing History’s 180 staff members work in 10 offices, including Chicago, Cleveland, Denver, London, Los Angeles, Memphis, New York, San Francisco, and Toronto..
